The recent national power interruptions have been lamented by the minority in parliament.

The Minority claimed that a lack of gas was to blame for the power outage.

The Minority noted that the current power outage “appears to be worsening, with many parts of the country experiencing long hours of darkness without prior notice to consumers” in a statement released on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 and signed by the Ranking Member of the Mines and Energy Committee, John Abdulai Jinapor.

According to the report, “while most Ghanaians have been experiencing sporadic power outages, others have been dealing with low currents and sporadic high voltage, which has occasionally caused damage to their electrical equipment and gadgets.”

It continued, “It is a well-known fact, especially among players in the energy sector, that due to the unstable financial situation of the Energy sector SOEs, the country currently experiences outages that are caused by a severe lack of petrol and difficultly obtaining alternate fuels.

Despite their government collecting approximately GHS20 billion in ESLA revenues and roughly 40 billion cedis in petroleum revenues, the majority of the energy sector SOEs have continued to experience worsening financial conditions after the assumption of office of President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia.

The Minority therefore demanded that “In order for the typical consumer and industry to plan and prevent damage to their electrical equipment, it is imperative that the government and accountable government agencies come upfront about the current condition of power outages and, if necessary, provide a schedule.”
